Welcome to Mrs Holden’s class!
We have a daily maths session straight after morning registration. So far this term, we have looked at multiplication, division and fractions. We like to use a mixture of practical approaches, group tasks and independent work to further our learning.
Our phonics session is just after breaktime – we are grouped according to what specific areas we are good at and those parts we need to work on. In Year 1 we are very lucky to also have ten minutes’ snack time after the phonics session.
We then have our Literacy session just before lunchtime. Our class text at the moment is The Three Little Pigs - we can tell you a lot of information about the big bad wolf!
Our first task after our lunch is always handwriting practice. We are taught how to form our letters in our school font. We then try to apply these skills to everything we write!
Wherever possible, we link all of our topic (history, geography, science and religious education) work together to help us understand and remember it. We are currently focusing on learning about people in history who have helped us and different materials.
Our PE session is on a Friday afternoon, led by a qualified member of the First Steps team. Please ensure your PE kit is in school all week. PE kit should include black shorts and a white t-shirt for indoor PE and tracksuit bottoms, jumper/jacket and suitable shoes/trainers for outdoor games. We do monitor who brings the correct clothes for PE.
Each child reads and has their book changed at least once a week. Please bring your book bag with your reading record. Please remember to write a comment if you read at home.
We have just introduced the Bug Club which enables children to access story books digitally. You will find more information regarding Bug Club on our school website in the Literacy area.
Merits and house points
Merits and house points are given out daily for things like hard work, superb effort, showing kindness to those around you and being respectful of other people.
We also have a merit assembly on a Friday. Merit certificates are given to children in each class for hard work or effort.
As well as rewards that are school-wide, we have our own rewards in class, such as Star of the Day and Mrs Holden’s proud cloud!
If you have any worries or concerns, or would simply like a chat about any area outlined above, please do not hesitate to catch me at the gate after school or make an appointment with the office.
