Welcome to Mrs Holden’s class!

Curriculum

Our daily maths session begins straight after morning registration. To master new concepts and deepen our learning, we use a mixture of practical approaches, group tasks and independent work. We also ensure that any extra intervention is provided on the same day in small groups.

We then complete a daily Literacy session after breaktime each morning. In Year 1 we are ensuring that we focus on securing key and fundamental writing skills, while developing a wide knowledge and love of various texts.

Directly after our Literacy lesson is a phonics session. We are grouped according to the areas we are strong at, and those parts we need to work on a little more, to ensure that teaching is specific to our needs. In Year 1 we are very lucky to also have ten minutes’ snack time during the course of the morning.

Our timetable after lunch provides access to a wide variety of learning, through Science, ICT, Music, Geography, History, Religious Education and Art. Wherever possible, we link all of our work in the wider curriculum together to help us understand, remember, and most of all, enjoy it!

We set time aside in the afternoon for additional handwriting and phonics practice, to reinforce and build confidence in key Literacy skills. We are taught how to form our letters in our school font. We then try to apply these skills to everything we write!

PE

Our PE session is on a Wednesday morning, led by Mrs Pearson. Please ensure your PE kit is in school all week as an extra session will also take place at various points during the week. PE kit should include black shorts and a white t-shirt for indoor PE and tracksuit bottoms, jumper/jacket and suitable shoes/trainers for outdoor games. We do monitor who brings the correct clothes for PE.

Reading

You will be given a book to take home and read, as well as having a book to read in school that is matched with your phonics group. Your progress in reading will be greatly aided by reading with an adult at home. Please remember to ask your adult to write a comment in your reading record when you read at home, as well as bringing your book to school each day. Everyone will read to an adult in school at least once a week and have their book changed where appropriate.

We are continuing this year to use Bug Club online, which enables children to access a huge range of books digitally. You will be given an individual log in for the site via Seesaw, giving you access to a number of books that are designed to maximise your reading progress. You will find more information regarding Bug Club on our school website in the Literacy area.

Merits and house points

Merits and house points are given out daily for things like hard work, superb effort, showing kindness to those around you and being respectful of other people.

We also have a merit assembly on a Friday. Merit certificates are given to children in each class for hard work or effort.

As well as rewards that are school-wide, we have our own rewards in class, such as Star of the Day and Mrs Holden’s proud cloud!

If you have any worries or concerns, or would simply like a chat about any area outlined above, please do not hesitate to catch me at the gate after school or make an appointment with the office.

Thank you

Mrs Holden
