Welcome to Mrs Jackson’s class!
Throughout the morning we have our core subjects.
We start with a Numeracy lesson, investigating mathematical concepts and using the ‘mastery approach’ to challenge and expand our thinking. Throughout our numeracy learning we use a combination of practical, pictorial and abstract resources to best support our learning. If we need extra support, the ‘same day intervention’ helps develop and secure our numeracy understanding.
After this we have our play where we take part in our ‘Walk a Mile’ and following this can enjoy a snack provided by the school.
After play, we have our literacy session. We are supported to work on core literacy skills and develop our confidence and passion in writing and reading. All of our writing is based on a key text that allows for lots of writing opportunities and class discussions.
After our Literacy lesson we do phonics in small groups to best meet our individual needs as learners. We have lots of opportunities to read and write.
In year 1, the afternoons allows children the opportunity to access the wider curriculum including Science, Geography, History, Religious Education, Music, Art and ICT. In year 1, we link all of our learning together whilst answering an overreaching question. This helps us enjoy the work and contextualizes our knowledge.
This term our question is: How can we look after a pet dinosaur?
Our P.E. lesson takes place on Thursday morning, but please ensure your child’s kit is brought in on a Monday morning and left in school for the week. PE kit should include black shorts and a white t-shirt for indoor PE and tracksuit bottoms, jumper/jacket and suitable shoes/trainers for outdoor games. P.E. kit is monitored each week.
Children received a book matched to their phonics ability and a reading record that will be monitored each week. Please read as often with your child as possible, leaving a little note in the Reading Record when you do so. Children will also have a book in school which is closely linked to their phonics group and will read with an adult in school as often as possible. Books will be changed once a week for those that return their books on a Monday morning as requested to ensure your child enjoys a range of stories and new reading opportunities.
Your child’s progress in reading will be greatly aided by reading with an adult at home as often as possible.
We are continuing this year to use Bug Club online, which enables children to access a huge range of books digitally. You will be given an individual log in for the site via Seesaw, giving you access to a number of books that are designed to maximise your child’s reading progress. You will find more information regarding Bug Club on our school website in the Literacy area.
Numeracy tasks will be set online via MyMaths- access to this can be retrieved through Seesaw and individual logins and passwords have been created.
Merits and house points are given out daily for things like hard work, superb effort, showing kindness to those around you and being respectful of other people.
We also have a merit assembly on a Friday. Merit certificates are given to children in each class for hard work or effort.
If you have any worries or concerns, or would simply like a chat about any area outlined above, please do not hesitate to catch any of the year 1 team at the end of the day or alternatively make an appointment with the office.
Thank you for your continued support
