Welcome to Our Year 2 Class

Curriculum

We have a session of Numeracy first thing in the morning. We do mental arithmetic, we solve problems, we master concepts and we reason our findings.

After play, we have our literacy session. We do phonics, lots of reading, writing, spelling and handwriting.

We link all of our topic work (which includes the subjects: history, geography, science, religious education, SEAL and PHSE (social and emotional aspects of learning and personal, health and social education), art and design, design technology and music.

Our current topic investigates the question: How did Dory and Nemo get home?

PE

PE can take place on various days within the week so please ensure your child’s kit is brought in on a Monday morning and left in school for the week. PE kit should include black shorts and a white t-shirt for indoor PE and tracksuit bottoms, jumper/jacket and suitable shoes/trainers for outdoor games.

Reading

Children will have a book in school which is closely linked to their phonics group and will read with an adult in school as often as possible.

Your progress in reading will be greatly aided by reading with an adult at home.

We are continuing this year to use Bug Club online, which enables children to access a huge range of books digitally. You will be given an individual log in for the site via Seesaw, giving you access to a number of books that are designed to maximise your child’s reading progress. You will find more information regarding Bug Club on our school website in the Literacy area.

Homework

Homework is a short task each week that reinforces basic skills. Homework is sent home on a Friday and is to be completed before the following Wednesday.

Merits

Merits and house points are given out daily for things like hard work, superb effort, showing kindness to those around you and being respectful of other people.

We also have a merit assembly on a Friday. Merit certificates are given to children in each class for hard work or effort.

As well as rewards that are school-wide, we have our own rewards in class, such as Star of the Day!

If you have any worries or concerns, or would simply like a chat about any area outlined above, please do not hesitate to catch any of the year 2 team at the end of the day or alternatively make an appointment with the office.

Thank you for your continued support
